With nearly 500,000 deaths from Covid-19, India is one of the countries hardest hit by the pandemic. The violent second wave that swept across the country last spring destroyed entire families and is believed to have left more than 100,000 orphans behind. Some of these minors whose childhood was sacrificed have found refuge in orphanages, but others are now completely on their own. Child protection services are overwhelmed by the scale of the disaster and many are now slipping under their radar. Without family, and especially without income, Covid orphans are forced to drop out of school and start working from an early age.
